Level 07 · Meet Sapling
Where Zcash meets a broader ecosystem.
Two things called Sapling: the 2018 Zcash protocol upgrade and the independent sapling.cash platform. Plus native vs. bridged ZEC, and why Solana activity stays public.

BeginnerStart here. No prior knowledge needed.
Two different things share the name Sapling, and mixing them up causes real confusion. One is part of Zcash itself. The other is an independent platform built by a separate company.
Sapling at sapling.cash describes itself as a Zcash-native launchpad and trading terminal. It runs on Solana. According to its documentation, coins launched through it are created on pump.fun, and trading uses ZEC that has been bridged to Solana.
That last part matters. Sapling’s own docs say the ZEC used on the platform is bridged ZEC, an ordinary token in a Solana wallet, and that it has none of Zcash’s shielded properties. Transfers on Solana are public.
Try it
First tell the two Saplings apart. Then follow ZEC from its home network into a public trading environment.
Sapling #1
The Zcash network upgrade
- What
- A change to the Zcash protocol itself
- When
- Activated October 2018 (block 419,200)
- Where
- On the Zcash blockchain
- Did
- Made shielded transactions fast and light enough for phones; added
zs1…addresses - Made by
- Zcash protocol developers, via the network upgrade process
Sapling #2 · sapling.cash
The independent platform
- What
- A launchpad and trading terminal, per its docs
- When
- A separate, much later project
- Where
- On Solana, using bridged ZEC
- Does
- Lets users launch and trade coins, with ZEC pairs and ZEC-related payouts
- Made by
- An independent company. Its docs say it is not affiliated with the Zcash Foundation or Electric Coin Co.
01Native Zcash networkDetails +
- Native ZEC
- Shielding available
- Zcash consensus rules
ZEC here is the real, native asset. It can be held and sent shielded. Privacy depends on using shielded addresses and wallets.
02Bridge / cross-chain serviceDetails +
- Third-party software
- Can delay or hold transfers
- Operator trust
A bridge or cross-chain service locks, holds or swaps ZEC so that a token representing it can exist on another chain. You now depend on its contracts, operators and uptime, not only on Zcash.
03Public blockchain trading environmentDetails +
- Bridged ZEC token
- No Zcash shielding
- Every transfer public
On a chain like Solana, bridged ZEC is an ordinary token. Buys, sells and transfers, including trades against a ZEC pair, are visible in public explorers and linked to your address.

How the platform connects to ZEC
As described in Sapling’s documentation when this chapter was reviewed. These are the platform’s claims, not $404’s, and its mechanics can change at any time.
- 01Two kinds of wallet
Users can connect either a Zcash wallet or a Solana wallet.
- 02Cross-chain transfers
Moving ZEC between Zcash and Solana goes through a third-party cross-chain service, in both directions.
- 03ZEC trading pair
ZEC is one of the assets coins on the platform can trade against, on Solana.
- 04ZEC-related rewards
Coin creators can direct a share of trading fees to destinations such as ZEC rewards for holders or a Zcash wallet. Rates and rules are set by the platform, so check its docs.
- 05Payouts to Zcash
The docs describe payouts to Zcash addresses, including shielded ones. Once ZEC arrives at a shielded address it’s back on Zcash, but the Solana-side history stays public.

Third-party platforms: always check the source
The platform descriptions in this chapter are based on Sapling’s documentation as reviewed in November 2026. Platforms change fees, pairs and mechanics, so read the current docs and risk disclosures yourself before using any of them. Sapling’s own docs say coins can go to zero. Nothing here is financial advice.
Key takeaways
- Sapling (2018) is a Zcash protocol upgrade. sapling.cash is an independent third-party platform on Solana.
- ZEC on Solana is bridged and does not inherit Zcash’s shielded privacy.
- Solana transactions, including trades against ZEC pairs, are public.
- Bridges add technical, operational and trust risk.
- $404 is not affiliated with Sapling and has not announced a launch platform.

Check what stuck
0 / 3 correct
01What was Sapling in 2018?
The Sapling upgrade activated in October 2018. The sapling.cash platform is a separate, later, third-party project.
02You buy a token paired with ZEC on Solana. Is your trade shielded?
It happens on Solana, so it’s public. Bridged ZEC carries none of Zcash’s shielded properties.
03What does using a bridge add?
Bridges depend on software and operators that sit outside the Zcash network. Transfers can be delayed, held or affected by bugs.
